Training programmes
ICIQ Summer Fellowships
-
The ICIQ Summer Fellowships Programme is an excellent opportunity to learn, work and live in a challenging environment of cutting-edge research under the supervision of distinguished scientists.
Outstanding undergraduate students with a background in Chemistry or related studies made the most of their Summer holidays by working in one of ICIQ’s research groups during the months of July, August and September. In 2016, ten candidates from different countries received one of these paid fellowships. They had the opportunity to carry out research projects in several groups at the centre and they enjoyed a full ICIQ experience. Since 2011, 19 summer fellows have joined ICIQ to carry out master or doctoral studies.
The ICIQ Summer Fellowships Programme is sponsored by Obra Social “la Caixa”.
Master in Synthesis, Catalysis and Molecular Design

The ICIQ/URV Master in Synthesis, Catalysis and Molecular Design provides scientific training in the design of new methods of synthesis, development of catalysts, computational design and management of environmentally friendly chemical processes. The Master also focuses on providing the skills needed to address research and development tasks and innovative activities in the industry.
In the 2015-2016 academic year seven students were awarded with an ICIQ’s Master scholarship to undertake master studies. Four of these students chose ICIQ to follow their doctoral studies.
Master coordinators:
Prof. Sergio CastillĂłn (URV)
Prof. Antonio M. Echavarren (ICIQ)

ICIQ Graduate Student Programme
-
The ICIQ Graduate Student Programme targets highly qualified and talented graduate students with an enthusiastic interest in chemistry research and it has been successful in attracting students from all over the world.
In 2016 we offered 23 PhD grants thought ICIQ’s International PhD programme. We were also part in the “la Caixa”-Severo Ochoa PhD Fellowship Programme and in the BIST International PhD Fellowship Programme.
ICIQ PhD students have the opportunity to follow an individual research project under the direction of one of the ICIQ group leaders for a period of four years. Throughout their stage at ICIQ, students make the most of an excellent team of researchers and highly specialised technicians in ICIQ’s cutting-edge core facilities. Other key aspects of the ICIQ International Graduate Student Programme are opportunities for short stays in renowned international research institutions, weekly seminars by leading scientists at the forefront of chemical research, as well as complementary training designed to ensure a successful career in a variety of areas, including hands-on training in the use of state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation, IP management, entrepreneurship, knowledge and technology transfer and communication skills.
The programme ultimately leads to a PhD degree. In partnership with the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) we offer the PhD studies “Chemical Science and Technology” and “Technologies for Nanosystems, Bioengineering and Energy.”
Postdoctoral stays
-
ICIQ is the place for highly talented scientists seeking advanced research training and career development opportunities in a competitive and international environment. Postdoctoral researchers at ICIQ have the opportunity to lead research projects under the mentoring of an internationally renowned Group Leader in a stimulating and multidisciplinary scientific environment. Postdoctoral contracts at any of ICIQ’s research groups are for a period of 1-5 years. During this time postdoctoral researchers broaden and deepen their research skills and boost their career perspectives so they can become successful independent research scientists.
Postdoctoral recruitment programmes:
ICIQ-International PostDoctoral Mobility Programme
The ICIQ International Postdoctoral Mobility Programme (ICIQ-IPMP) in 2016 allowed us to incorporate 14 postdoctoral researchers. The programme is partially funded by the Marie Curie Co-funding of Regional, National and International Programme (COFUND) action of the European Commission and the Severo Ochoa Award of Excellence from the Spanish Government. The ICIQ-IPMP aims to set up a training programme addressed to highly talented and motivated experienced researchers to give them the opportunity to develop their research career at the Institute.
CELLEX- ICIQ Postdoctoral Programme on High Throughput Experimentation for the discovery and optimization of catalytic processes
Ten postdoctoral researchers have been working at ICIQ in research projects that include an intensive use of High Throughput Experimentation (HTE) methods and techniques. The researchers carried out their research in the following groups: Melchiorre, Martin, Kleij, Pericà s, Muñiz, Echavarren, Vidal, Shafir and the CSOL unit.
